In a recent interview with artists Guerra de la Paz (Alain Guerra and Neraldo de la Paz), it was asked why they work with such a volume of clothing and fabric, they responded, "it's free!"   Which at first felt like an awkward answer but in revisiting that interview it actually highlights a growing and sustaining trend in contemporary art, that of the handmade.

Sometimes your forced to walk in and say WOW. My, oh my, just what is this here. Than of course you start rationalizing; you think I could have done that, how simple this is, how rudimentary even.... It is, however, quite another thing to actually do it, to accomplish from start to finish something so grand, something just so... WOW.

Guerra de la Paz is a great work of visual fiction and a beautiful examination of a person's place in history, society and the world.

Their collaborative surnames translate to War of Peace, timely, no? Their very name is a conundrum, one that speaks to a society where we find our selves at war with the concept of peace.

I almost recall hearing some grumbling a ways back about the amount of money America was willing to put up (or not put up) for their pavilion this year. I wonder if that has any bearing on the fact, that yes while of course Ed Ruscha's work is most incredible, I am not disputing his contributions however this exhibit as a whole felt, no pun intended, well... flat. Course of an Empire what a stunning title, poignant, relevant, and in Europe most appropriate conversation topic, so why when I walked in did I fell as if I swindled?

I recall a time when I was younger, my sister and I use to share a bedroom. She was six, I was eight, she would wake me every night with little tears in her eyes whispering to me that some one had come into our room and switched our bedroom furniture around confusing her, she swore it was some form of magic, the kind only children believe, the kind with simple solutions. All we had to do to set it right before mom woke up, and surly she would with all the noise we read more
Greetings from the Venetian Lagoon, where a surprise lays behinds each twist and turn. A world on water, here you can only rush around as fast as your feet will carry you, for there are no cars or bikes allowed on this chain of islands. In a city as complicated as the worlds most metropolis city it is easy to get lost in it's warp of alley ways and tunnel like streets. No need to fret however gelato is only one euro and is in abundance for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so if you go slowly not to read more
JAMES MARSHALL (DALEK) is a busy person nowadays. An acclaimed artist of the beloved and bizarre "Space Monkey" Dalek hit the ground running back in 1992 and like the energizer bunny hasn't stopped since. He recently exhibited in a sold out exhibition at the McCaig Wells Gallery in Brooklyn. I met him amidst a swelling crowd of admirers. He is soft-spoken and incredibly down to earth. His character far departed from the maniacal manners of his badass monkey. read more

...location...between the Atlantic Ocean & the Meridian of your mind...sub moronic subterfuge of truth...

Ahoy, Matey-face! Yet another artist statement to appease the press writers, accompanies, layabouts, un-creative stowaways   & would be critics. Ahem...

Wednesday January 12, 2005, will live on in the memories of our minds for years to come. If you were not privileged enough to attend Martha Cooper's opening party provided by Power House, a beautiful three room gallery in the West Village of New York City, than by all means you missed the get together of the century. Hip Hop Files 1979-1984 , published by Here and There Publishing Co., Cooper's most recent anthology was greeted with an overwhelmingly positive response. Hundreds of movers and shakers from the scene were in attendance, read more
In the early 1970's, a loosely defined community of artists established the groundwork of an international visual language with worldwide cultural appeal. The community's newest member was on his way; Anibal Padrino was born in New York City's south Bronx.

Padrino spent his formative years at the epicenter of a new cultural movement, which later came to be known as Hip-Hop. His literal environment read more

What a fine fall evening… Warm enough not to have to bundle up, and cool enough not to swelter among the hundreds of people that turned out for the Soho gallery Artist Spaces’ annual fundraising extravaganza, entitled Night of 1,000 Drawings. If you didn't make it to this truly affordable art buying marathon than you absolutely missed out! I arrived late in the evening, but according to Igore DaCosta, one of the gallery members, the day was filled with read more
Regardless of where you stand, newly categorized as either a red or a blue state- Our jobs as citizens of a free nation is to question and guide the law of this land. The goal of a democratic society as a whole is to uphold and guarantee its long-standing tradition of personal freedoms bonded to its citizenry by our constitutional rights. Since its passage following the September 11, 2001 attacks, the Patriot Act has played a key part, and often the leading role, in a number of operations.

When asked to describe his style of art, the brilliantly simplistic 30-year-old Juan Doe more often then not will brandish a box-cutter, threaten to slash the asker's soul, then proceed to perform a backflip landing in a perfect split, telepathically screaming, "That's my style!" At age three, Juan Doe held his first showing at the Rizzoli Gallery, a series titled "Who are You to Accuse Me?" which consisted of brutally beaten and dismembered Sesame Street characters done on discarded high school read more
