BROSE PARTINGTON Lives and works in Indianapolis Born USA | 1979 Brose Partington creates mechanical sculpture pieces that are based on cyclical patterns found in nature, but also in man. His pieces stand as eloquent representations of process. 'Urban Development' (2008) is a series of 'buildings' made of playing cards, that mechanically raise and lower themselves over time. His piece 'Tide', consists of black fabric that is mechanically controlled to 'wash' over the space in which it is installed. The piece is a translation of a simple natural pattern, but it is also subtly menacing, in that it harbours all of the connotations of a black tide. Brose' 'Sprawl' is a spiral of domino like pieces of plexiglass on hinges, that are slowly turned over by a rotating arm. when it reaches the outermost part of the spiral, the arm rotates the other way and turns them over until it reaches the centre, starting the cycle again. His pieces also explore more abstract cycles. 'Sold' (2008) explores the relationship of desire and availability. 'Sold' is a device that arbitrarily deposits red dot stickers upon the wall. The piece plays on the concept that as something becomes more unavailable, the desire to own it increases, a concept all too poignant in the art world.
