VITALIY PUSHNITSKIY

Lives and works in St. Petersburg

Born Russia | 1967

Vitaliy Pushnitskiy's explorations with sculpture have led him to works that embody a rich conversation between materials and overall form. His use of strofoam to creat elaborate and detailed cityscapes creates a dialogue between the idea of a cheap, nearly disposable and that of creating a work of art on a large scale, one might say monumental. An interesting element of works such as 'New Babylon' is the level of craftsman ship and detail that are performed upon a material one might classify as being 'temporary'.

His use of found objects promote a reexamination of these materials. In using things such as old television sets, which he juxtaposes with images from an even older time, he has brought both into a new context. This recontextualization creates a dramatic historical discourse, which doesn't fail to catch the attention of the viewer, and present them with his exploration of the levels of medium and message.

Vitaly was born in 1967 in Leningrad. From 1988-1994 he was a student of the Academy of Fine Arts, graphic arts department. Since 1994, he has been a member of the St. Petersburg Union of Artists. He lives and works in St. Petersburg, practicing painting, installation, drawing and sculpture
