ERIC DOERINGER

Lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Born USA | 1974

From the sidewalks of Chelsea to private collections, Eric Doeringer's deviant appropriations would be at home in either locale. Belying the order of the art institution, the Brooklyn based artist exploits the iconic imagery of his contemporaries.

Doeringer’s practice is conceptually-based and he works in a variety of media. Notably in his series Bootleg, Doeringer aligns himself with artists and aesthetic satirists who dispel the myths of social hierarchy to unveil disorder and subvert systems. Doeringer creates small unauthorized copies of contemporary artworks by more than 100 different artists. Like a counterfeit handbag vendor, Doeringer sells his Bootlegs on the street in Chelsea and outside of art fairs at prices far below those charged by “legitimate” dealers. By denouncing authorship through reproduction and imitation, Doeringer mocks the designation of value within the interchangeable margins of hi and low culture.

Eric Doeringer earned a BA with Honors from the Brown University Department of Visual Art and an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He has lived and worked in Brooklyn since 1998. In addition to his aforementioned guerilla artwork sales, Doeringer has had solo exhibitions at Apex Art (New York), Katharine Mulherin (Toronto), The Fuel Collection (Philadelphia), and Another Year in LA (Los Angeles). Doeringer was commissioned by The Whitney Museum to create a multiple for their Initial Public Offerings program and has been included in exhibitions at the Museo De Arte Contemporaneo De Castilla Y Leon (MUSAC), The Bruce Museum, The Itami [Japan] Museum of Arts And Crafts, and Takashi Murakami’s GEISAI Miami artist fair.
